Bob Weaver Tribute

Bob was born in 1928 & was 80 years old when he took the checkers on Feb 11 2009. He had no kids, but racing was his family. He & brother Don started racing in 1946 at Gilmore & ran all the great tracks both on the West Coast & beyond.

Brother Bob was a very shy guy, unlike his likable & knowledgeable brother Don, The creator & curator of "The Legends of Ascot."

Don shared a story with me that I thought you all might like to hear. Don had been running a midget in the 60s & it was a good piece of machinery. Brother Bob was a great wrench & made good equipment better. Don had Parnelli as a chauffeur that night & they had the car in the Trophy Dash at Ascot.

Knowing his brother was the kind of guy that always stood in the back of all the pictures, especially Trophy Dashes, his plan was to get him front & center for the picture if Parnelli won.

As luck would have it, Parnelli DID win the dash, & as the car came to the start/finish line for the ceremony, the Vel's Convertible Trophy Car came down the track with the Trophy Girl on the hood! Weavy saw his chance & sprung into action. He swept the girl off the hood before Don Basile could get to her, dragged his brother Bob from his usual place behind the crew, & put them both next to Parnelli in front of the car & a cheering crowd. Don said that his brother even kissed the Trophy Girl! Don took the Trophy Girl back to the car & HE rode away on the hood of the car to the applause of a packed house. What a night!

Don told me that Bob Weaver was instrumental in the development of the suspension of Parnelli's Johnny Lightning Indy Colt, & of course was on JC Agajanian's Indy Car Crew for many years.

Bob's final accomplishment was bringing his entire family together for his internment in North Carolina. RIP Bob Weaver.
